Matheus Machado designed these business cards for Bauen Studio, an architecture, design and landscaping studio located in São Paulo, Brazil.
The studio’s name, Bauen, means “to build” in German. This is similar to the studio’s mission, which is to build a project with meaning.
Bauen produces projects that stretch the boundaries of traditional architecture by incorporating elements of both contemporary style and the Bauhaus characteristic, which is an expressive movement of the 19th century.
A Bold Brand Image
The business card design is bold and modern at the same time, with attention to details that make it stand out.
“The client’s idea was to be able to convey a modern and detailed look to all the materials,” Matheus said.
“The result was a highly identifiable design, which evokes the Brazilianness of the owners and, at the same time, the expressiveness of one of the most important movements in art.”
“Together with all the elements, the visual identity creates a composition mode that becomes uniform in all materials, even if the positions of the elements are changed.”
Geometry Symbols and Illustrations
The idea behind the identity is based on the basic geometric shapes of a square, triangle, and circle.
These shapes are combined with a rustic and Brazilian theme to show the many different ideas and thoughts that go into each project.
The illustrations on the business card, according to Matheus, represent both the Brazilian flag and its incorporated elements, as well as characteristic elements of Bauhaus paintings and works.
“This movement had a strong influence on the formation of the company’s partners, who wanted it to be honoured in the project.”
A Minimal yet Modern Typography
The typeface used for the logotype is the Roc Grotesk font.
For the body text, Matheus used the Inter font to convey a more modern and minimalist look to the applications.
He explained, “This font represents the brand’s ideals in the Brazilian aspect, which has strength, charisma and movement. Which makes its use a perfect combination for identity construction.”
An Earthy Colour Palette
“The earth-tone colour palette is represented by the three natural elements that are the pillars of the construction.”
“With beige representing the sand that will become the glass; the clay that will become the brick; and the grass that will become the foundry of the work.”
The Printing of Business Cards
These business cards have not yet been printed, but if they were, Matheus would have them printed on a textured matte paper.
“Only standard serigraphy will be used for card-printing, with a difference in paper weight that’ll be greater than conventional ones.”
“This is to give a heavier, dense, well-constructed feeling, adding value to the business cards.”
