Dorka Lazar designed these business cards for Nene, a poke bar and shop based in Hawaii.
These colourful business cards are such a delight! They give such a warm and welcoming feel, and best of all, they come in multiple illustrative versions.
You can pick whichever resonates with you, either the ukulele, nene bird, fish, or botanical elements.
The Brand Image
Nene Poke* emphasises on using traditional methods and fresh, healthy ingredients. It aims to provide customers a relaxing experience while enjoying a delicious meal.
The colourful, welcoming feel of the premise helps people unwind and marvel at the spectacular landscape and natural beauty while being whisked away to a hidden corner of Hawaii.
The business cards are a reflection of those feelings and, at the same time, impress with their bold colours and illustrations.
(*Poke bar: a restaurant that serves a traditional Hawaiian delicacy: cubed raw fish mixed with various vegetables, seasonings and sauces.)
Nene – The Mascot
The bird illustration on the business card is called Nene (or Nēnē), a goose that lives only on certain islands in Hawaii.
“Also known as the state bird of Hawaii, Nene has an important role in the local belief system,” Dorka said.
“It’s mentioned as the guardian spirit of the earth and the unifying force of the mountains and the coast.”
“Not only is this bird adorable with its lovable and quirky appearance, but it also symbolises a deep connection to tradition.”
“Its dual nature makes it a perfect representation of the brand’s values, and also the perfect name for the restaurant.”
Typography and Colours
Dorka chose the Savate font as the base of the logotype because it’s a playful yet characteristic typeface. Other fonts used for body texts are Apercu Mono and Corbel.
The use of lowercase letters also made the logotype appear friendly and endearing.
As for the brand colours, Dorka commented that the vivid colours and illustrations evoke Hawaii’s rich flora, diverse landscapes, and culture – from the iconic hibiscus to the sandy shores and sea.
Her aim was to keep the illustrations simple yet versatile. With these vibrant colours, these graphic elements become impactful and memorable for the brand.
“It was important to keep the vivid colours of the brand and the illustrations to portray the fun and tropical feeling,” she added.
Even the packaging designs are as colourful and creative, with the three curves on the front of the packaging box that evoke the curve or arch-like shape that appears in the menu and logo designs.
The Printing of Business Cards
These business cards were printed by Digitalpress Kft., a printing company in Budapest, Hungary.
“I chose Keaykolour Particles Snow 100% Recycled 300g paper for the business cards as it has a natural feel, high rigidity, and a naturally textured matte surface,” Dorka explained.
