Jennifer Seoh designed these business cards for her personal branding as a Malaysia-based graphic designer specializing in brand, editorial and packaging design.
“This personal branding was actually done during my final year of university. As we were about to enter the creative industry soon, I wanted to design something that was a culmination of everything I’ve learned so far, who I am as an individual, and also the kind of designer I hoped to be in the future,” Jennifer shared when asked about the design goal of her one-of-a-kind business card design.
“The overall design is simple and direct, with a clear sense of personality showing through the unique typography and colour choice.”
Explaining more about her design inspirations, she continued, “I guess part of the perks of having an uncommon family name is that the username is never taken. As my social media handle was always the same everywhere, I thought it’d be the simplest way for me to promote myself as a new designer.”
“Based on that idea, I came up with a few phrases that could incorporate my name, and at the same time share a bit of my personality as well.”
The primary typeface Jennifer used in the design is called Freight Display. “I love how the angled curves add an edge to a classic serif font. I wanted to explore how typesetting itself could evoke certain feelings, so italicized and roman typefaces were mixed to create a sense of playful sarcasm.”
“On the other side of the card, there is a radar chart of my skills as a designer but modified so that the visual would be more interesting and unique. The orange blob is deliberately organic in shape—a personal reminder to always be growing and developing as a designer.”
These business cards have not been printed yet. If they were, “It would be nice to play around with embossing to highlight certain parts of the design,” and we couldn’t agree more!
All in all, this is a fun, super catchy business card design that screams attention while being witty at the same time.
