Studio Fable designed these business cards for Art Rickshaw, an art school, gallery, and café based in Kolkata, India.
The art school’s business card design is vibrant and immediately catches the eye! The colors go so well together that they create a nice contrasting background for the logo, making it stand out even more.
“The overall visual identity was inspired by the different elements used in the studio and found in Kolkata, where the studio was born,” said Sakshi Jalan, the founder of Studio Fable.
These business cards come in multiple versions too, and each of them screams attention!
An Artistic Brand Image with Cultural Influences
This all-in-one art studio gives everyone a special opportunity to learn, create and showcase their art work. They provide a wide variety of art-related activities, including workshops, classes for kids, pottery, sculpture, art-themed birthday parties, and more.
Sakshi explained that the client’s main requirement was to showcase specific artistic elements from the studio, their offerings (painting, pottery etc), and the culture of the city in a creative way.
“Art Rickshaw is located in a lush, quiet bylane of Kolkata, a lane that holds a lot of art and culture – design studios, art spaces, and a lot of greenery.”
“The design goal was to showcase the foliage around the Art Rickshaw studio along with elements that depict not only art but the culture of the city too.”
“On a closer look, you’ll notice the grand monument Victoria Memorial on the canvas in the packaging, Kolkata’s classic old letterboxes and tea ‘bhands’ or the earthen clay pots, and the legendary rickshaw.”
A Friendly Logo Design and Typography
The brand’s logotype was made up of lowercase letters, and Sakshi chose a font with curved edges to make it look warm and friendly.
According to Sakshi, this is what the space is about – a judgment-free place for people of all ages to immerse themselves in art!
Apart from that, the logo also features paint droplets to directly communicate what the brand does.
When it comes to selecting the right font for the brand, Sakshi stated, “The typeface is a modified version of Google Font’s Quicksand.”
“The wordmark is designed to appeal to a vast range of audiences with its soft, minimalist yet playful form.”
“It fits well with different aspects of an artistic brand, with its subtle additions of a paintbrush and a paint drop as concurrent themes.”
She detailed the decision to use primarily lowercase characters for the logotype, saying, “The usage of lowercase is considered more informal and warm, and the curved edges of the font help in reinforcing this.”
“Art Rickshaw was founded with the motto of making art accessible to all – to create a safe space where like-minded individuals could come and express themselves freely.”
“Therefore, we tried to make the logo a warm, comfortable identity that reflects this idea.”
Illustrations of Botanical and Art Tools
The business card also features a beautiful illustration formed by natural elements and common drawing tools.
Sakshi said that the studio and its location in Kolkata, which is known as the “city of joy,” were the main sources of inspiration for the illustrations.
“With the usage of botanical illustrations, we aimed to portray the lush locality, indulging in art amidst a peaceful and green environment away from the hustle and bustle of the city.”
“The illustration style was kept the same to ensure that the design looks cohesive and seamless.”
Vibrant Colour Palette
“We wanted the business cards to be striking and colorful, yet not too bright or childlike.”
“We decided to go ahead mainly with blue, as it merged the best of both worlds. Blue represents freedom and creativity, yet isn’t too bright or dull. We thought it was the perfect color for the brand.”
Sakshi also created different color versions of the business cards, such as pink and red, for the other co-founders to suit their tastes.
The Printing of Business Cards
These business cards were digitally-printed on matte finish card stock (with no texture) by La Digital, a printing company in Kolkata.
Even though the first batch of prints doesn’t have colored edges, Sakshi said she’d recommend it if they go ahead with the white (background) version of the business card.
“I think the colored edges would add a nice finishing touch.”
Indeed, it would.
