Lauren Eskin designed these business cards for The Rustic Barn, a family-owned home décor store in Killingworth, Connecticut.
It all started with a small red barn that had been transformed into a workshop, and is now a one-of-a-kind retail experience. In 2015, husband and wife Steve and Lisa Martins opened the doors to the Rustic Barn, and customers instantly fell in love with Steve’s handmade farmhouse furniture and Lisa’s eye for interior design.
The Rustic Barn is now a workshop in the original barn and a farmhouse furniture store down the road.
A Welcoming Brand Image
According to Lauren, the couple’s original barn and a handmade sign that hangs in the couple’s workshop inspired the brand design.
“At the entrance to the original barn, they have a handmade sign that says, ‘In this barn, we build, we welcome, we create, we inspire, we invite, we give life to, we appreciate.’”
“We wanted their brand and business cards to evoke the same warm and welcoming feeling, but in a modern rustic style.”
“The layout of their business cards is contemporary and refined with clean lines and white space, but has a warmth to it with a custom illustration of their barn and signature red ‘RB’ logo stamp.”
Retro & Classic Barn Illustration
What we love about the business card design is its clean and artistic nature, with a delicate illustration that relates to the origin of the brand, giving it a retro yet classy vibe.
When asked about the inspiration behind the drawing, Lauren replied, “The barn illustration was based on the barn that Steve turned into his furniture workshop, which eventually inspired Steve and Lisa to create The Rustic Barn décor and furniture stores.”
“In fact, Steve still uses the barn as his workshop to this day!”
A Modern Typography
The typeface used on the business card is Sweet Sans Pro, and the logotype is a customized Melbourne typeface.
“Throughout their brand, we pair Sweet Sans Pro with EB Garamond to maintain a mix of modern and rustic styles,” Lauren said.
Neutral Colour Palette
Lauren kept the entire brand neutral, primarily using two shades of beige and charcoal.
“We accent every piece of the brand’s print materials with a red ‘RB’ as their signature stamp and let it be the only pop of color.”
“Because their store is so lively and colorful, we didn’t want the brand graphics to compete with their incredible photos. So, we created something neutral with a memorable pop of color to make it theirs.”
The Printing of Business Cards
A local print shop in Connecticut handles all of The Rustic Barn’s print materials. Although the business card image is a mockup, Lauren shared her printing suggestions,
“This business card should be printed on textured paper, preferably linen or laid paper, to give it a warm and comfortable feel.”
“We wouldn’t recommend any special finishes, as the brand is known for keeping things modest and simple.”
