Mauricio Zanon designed these business cards for MEW, a high-end brand of smartphone accessories that started out in Brazil by selling its products in more than 200 Vivo retail stores before expanding to online sales and its own stores.
The business card design has a sleek and minimalist look, focusing on the uniqueness of the logotype itself.
The visual identity is meant to evoke a young, bold look with a techy vibe.
Mew comes from the Portuguese word “meu,” which means “my.” Mauricio subbed a “W” for a “U,” indicating ownership in the phrase “my cell phone,” or “meu cellular” in Portuguese.
“While MEU is also commonly used in most parts of Brazil, the idea of using the letter W (instead of U) is to create a unique word that’s exclusive for the brand and that resonates with the target audience.”
“The brand is active and always in motion, ready to transform itself without fear and evolve into new solutions that solve the customers’ problems.”
A Custom Logotype
The lowercase logotype was custom-designed for the brand and it hopes to transmit movement.
There’s also one very clever reason for how the rounded font logotype is displayed on the business card.
“The logo is dynamic in its forms and the brand name ‘MEW’ can also be read in the same way if rotated 180 degrees.”
“Also, the logotype conveys connection because the letters are formed by joining them together.”
“Overall, the brand’s minimalism positions it at the premium and hi-tech level.”
Monochrome Color Palette
The business cards are mainly black and white, and according to Mauricio, they bring life and dynamic to the brand.
“When combined with the color black, it conveys the idea of high quality and premium status.”
“The high technology of its products is assumed throughout the project, in the supporting language and also in the way the symbol was built.”
“Everything was planned for new product lines to be inserted in the brand’s catalogue, honoring a color palette that connects with black as the main color, along with the brand’s proposed values.”
The Printing of Business Cards
The business cards have not been printed yet, but if they were, Mauricio recommended printing them on premium paper so as to stay consistent with its product’s packaging.
